The UltraMARAthon: For the Future of the Mara

6

The UltraMARAthon was born out of crisis but has grown into a movement of hope. When the COVID-19 pandemic brought tourism in the Maasai Mara to a standstill, the very foundations of conservation and community welfare were at risk. The Mara’s conservancies, which provide a critical buffer between the Reserve and surrounding agricultural lands, rely heavily on tourism to fund wildlife protection and community development. With that revenue gone, rangers went unpaid, healthcare access dwindled, and the ecosystem itself faced growing threats.

In response, the UltraMARAthon was created; not only as a race, but as a lifeline. What began as an urgent call to action has, five years on, become a driving force for lasting impact in one of Kenya’s most vital ecosystems. Since its inception, the UltraMARAthon has donated over KSh 4.3 million to each of the six key beneficiaries, ensuring that every stride taken on race day directly supports conservation and community resilience. Africa Mission Services Health Centre has been able to expand maternal healthcare, immunisations, and access to medical, eye, and dental services.

The Mara Elephant Project has strengthened ranger welfare, ensuring salaries are paid and equipment provided, enabling rangers to patrol more effectively. Conservancies including Lemek, Mara North, Ol Choro, and Enonkishu have seen ranger housing, outposts, and training improved; boosting security, morale, and preparedness on the ground.

The impact of the UltraMARAthon is clear: healthier communities, stronger conservation networks, and rangers equipped to defend one of the world’s most treasured landscape. More than a race, the UltraMARAthon is a promise to the future of the Mara; one that unites runners, partners, and communities in safeguarding wildlife, strengthening healthcare, and empowering those who call this extraordinary place home.

The 6th UltraMARAthon is happening on November 15 this year.
