The Lower Zambezi National Park is a breathtaking expanse of wilderness, home to diverse wildlife and a delicate ecosystem that demands rigorous protection. At the heart of this conservation effort stands Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ), a non-profit organisation working alongside the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) to safeguard the park and promote sustainable environmental stewardship. Through innovative initiatives and strategic partnerships, CLZ has supported anti-poaching efforts, community engagement, and gender inclusion in conservation.

The Role of Community Scouts and DNPW in Conservation

Wildlife and natural resource protection in Lower Zambezi is driven by the dedicated work of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and Community Scout patrols. These teams operate in rugged terrain, enduring harsh conditions to combat illegal activities such as poaching, illegal mining, and deforestation. In 2024 alone, their efforts led to 175 arrests of illegal miners, 83 dismantled drying racks, 40 discovered poacher camps, and the confiscation of 1160 kg of bushmeat. They also play a crucial role in mitigating human-wildlife conflict in neighboring villages, ensuring a harmonious coexistence between local communities and wildlife.

With 15,716 patrol-person days recorded in 2024, the unwavering dedication of these patrol teams underscores the vital role of conservation enforcement. Recognizing the need for inclusivity and gender equity in this field, CLZ took a bold step in 2021 by establishing Zambia’s first all-female Community Scout Unit—Kufadza, which means Inspire in the local Goba language. This initiative, in collaboration with DNPW, marked a transformative moment in conservation efforts, proving that women are essential to the protection of natural resources.

Kufadza: Breaking Barriers in Conservation

Traditionally, conservation and law enforcement roles in Africa have been dominated by men, but the Kufadza Female Scouts are reshaping this narrative. Through rigorous training and frontline deployment, these women have demonstrated extraordinary courage and resilience in safeguarding Lower Zambezi’s biodiversity.

Since its inception, Kufadza has grown into a formidable unit, with members taking on specialized roles in the Marine Unit, Dog Unit, and Rapid Deployment Team. In 2024, new recruits underwent extensive training in Kafue National Park, reinforcing their skills in anti-poaching tactics, wildlife monitoring, and human-wildlife conflict resolution. Today, CLZ employs 52 Community Scouts, with 13 of them being women, highlighting significant strides towards gender equity in conservation.

Beyond Conservation: The Ripple Effect of Kufadza

Beyond their operational duties, Kufadza members serve as beacons of empowerment, challenging societal norms and inspiring the next generation of female leaders. By stepping into roles once deemed unsuitable for women, they are paving the way for greater inclusivity in conservation. Their presence not only strengthens wildlife protection but also fosters a culture of gender equity, proving that conservation is a responsibility shared by all.

Moreover, Kufadza scouts actively engage with local communities, raising awareness about environmental sustainability and wildlife protection. Their work extends beyond the park’s boundaries, encouraging young girls to pursue careers in conservation and advocating for policies that support gender diversity in environmental stewardship.
