Growing Hope: How Mlango Farm Foundation is Changing Lives in Rural Kenya

1-Mar-27-2025-06-49-20-1021-AM

In the heart of Kenya, where many families depend on farming for their livelihood, the Mlango Farm Foundation is showing that change is possible. By offering sustainable farming solutions, hands-on learning, and a unique opportunity for children and youth to connect with nature, Mlango Farm is transforming both the land and the people who live on it.

Exploring the fun of food and farming

For more than 15 years, Mlango Farm has been a peaceful escape from the busy city life of Nairobi, providing a place where children and young people can experience the natural world firsthand. In a country where urbanization has led many children to never leave the city, Mlango Farm offers a rare opportunity to explore farm life. Through interactive farm visits, children learn where their food comes from, understand the importance of taking care of the environment, and see firsthand how nature and farming are deeply connected.

Empowering the Next Generation of Farmers

The Foundation’s mission goes beyond just education—it’s about nurturing a sense of responsibility and connection to the land. Mlango Farm’s educational programs teach young visitors practical skills and environmental stewardship. From guided tours of the farm to lessons in crop cultivation, waste management, livestock care, and even beekeeping, children are exposed to a range of farming activities that help them understand the value of sustainable practices. They learn about recycling, composting, and how to grow food in ways that respect the environment, while developing an appreciation for the earth and its resources.

Education on sustainable farming

But Mlango Farm isn’t just about teaching children; it’s also about helping farmers in surrounding communities grow their businesses and improve their livelihoods. The Foundation works with local farmers to introduce techniques like making organic fertilizers, water harvesting and intercropping, techniques that boost crop yields while preserving the land. These methods enable farmers to grow more with fewer resources, ensuring they can sustain their work in the long term, despite challenges like water scarcity.

Pay it forward with education

As a strong advocate for education, Mlango Farm actively fosters partnerships with local schools and businesses to enhance youth education. Through its sponsorship programs, the farm provides more students with the opportunity to visit and learn about sustainable agriculture. These collaborations help extend the foundation's impact, benefiting the wider community.
